Queen Elizabeth I
Royal Palaces
Queen Elizabeth I owned over a dozen magnificent palaces. Some of these, like Whitehall Palace and
Richmond Palace, she spent a lot of time in, others, like The Tower of London and Westminster Palace
had other uses. The Tower of London was mainly used as a prison, and Westminster Palace was used by
Parliament and the law courts. The hall, pictured above, is virtually all that remains of the medieval palace.
Most of the palaces were in, or near, London, but some, like Windsor Castle and Hatfield Palace,
were further afield.
Below you can read more about the Queen's amazing palaces,
beginning with Greenwich Palace, where the Queen was born in 1533, and ending with Richmond Palace, where she died in 1603.
